Based on the recommendation of several TMP members, I'm trying out self-etching primer on metal miniatures to try to get a more chip-resistant primer coat.
So far it seems to go on very thin and give a nice primer coat on the models, with fine details intact and no filling whatsoever.
I know obviously that self-etching primer isn't designed for plastic, it's meant for clean metal.
But I'm wondering if it will harm plastic bases (like the typical black plastic square/round bases) if I glue the metal minis. to the bases first before spraying them. As a general thing, it's easier to prime minis. properly from all sides when they are standing up as opposed to laying them down on cardboard and then turning them on the other side.
I'm also going to be priming groups of AWI metal minis. on MDF bases. Wondering if it will harm MDF bases.
From what I've read online, modelers claim that it doesn't hurt plastic perse. However I know that self-etching primer has a corrosion/anti-rust element to preserve metals.
Maybe it's just better to lay the metal minis. on cardboard and deal with spraying them that way…
Thanks in advance!
