Damn. That's impressive.

I think that it should be covered and slowly revealed as the player-characters work their way into it.

Yeah, that would be grand but I think it was used as is. In which case the tactical decisions about avenues of approach are pretty simplistic. There is no real maneuvering possible. Perhaps less exciting as a game than the the visuals. It's a siege.

I suspect it was 3D printed terrain. Very impressive.

He might have covered it with (black construction?) paper to create some 'fog of war'. I did similar with a 2.75D build for the "Steading of the Hill Giants", I did for Tundra Con 2017. I had to complete the entire build, prior to running the game, so I covered the unexplored rooms with paper, to give some sense of mystery to what was just beyond. Cumbersome, but it worked. Cheers!

Actually, it was a blast to play on. You enter the catacombs from various directions depending on the secret entrances scattered about the middle of the larger, above ground desert board.

The photos in the original post are actually from 2017. In 2018 the game master added a bunch of jungle terrain to the middle section of the board which is where the multiple entrances to get into the catacombs were hidden. You can read a lot more about this game and how much fun it was on my blog: link
