I find very little on a breakdown/description of Sudanese Mahdist flags . What they mean , who carried them, is there a difference between those carried in the 1880s as opposed to say 1898 ? Note: Im mainly interested in the 1880s . Is there a book or has someone collected the info thru research ? |

The Mahdist Wars Source Books are awesome for info on the Sudan conflict and TVAG sells sheets of Mahdist flags which would probably be helpful as well. |

There's an article in Wargames Illustrated #132 I could send (pdf) if you let me have your email address but there's not much in it. Go Strong into the Desert by Mike Snook is good for clothing regional / tribal variations and for changes in Mahdist dress over the period. It's a truly exceptional book- I had a quick skim but didn't see anything on Mahdist banners. Can't pass up the opportunity to put in a plug for Karari by Zulpho – a Sudanese account. Good luck! |

There is nothing in Snook's book on banners. However, TVAG has a full range of 28mm flags. To be honest one you've done some research it's not difficult to make up some very plausible options. There's a famous painting of the Battle of Tamai in which one flag is depicted. |

Coolyork, never worry brother. I'm making you a good batch of authentic flags!!! I'll have them ready for you at the con. The above noted sources are all good. The Flag Dude, TVAG, and one or two others sell some nice flags. I believe the Perry plastics Sudan box comes with a couple of paper ones. The excellent War Flag site has Awesome free ones. link Cheers, JB |

Actually, the Mahdist Wars Flags Collection provides the most thoroughly researched examples available, and are offered in 6mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25/28mm, and 54mm. The number of flags in each sets varies by size, but there are over 170 flags in 25/28mm alone, each based on actual examples existing in museums and private collections. The Arabic text and calligraphy are correct, with individual variations between examples. Individual sets are grouped partly be period and by those carried by specific Emirs. There is even a set of flags seen in the films "Khartoum" and "The Four Feathers"--for those who might prefer a mix of accurate and Hollywood versions. Finally, there is also a full set of all flags carried by Egyptian and Sudanese units, right down to individual companies for games played at that level. And at an average of about 50 cents per flag, there is no greater variety, number, and authenticity available from any other source. Deliberately blurred samples, other information, and the means of ordering are all to be found at this link No brag, just fact. TVAG |
