I don't wish to re-base, have buckets of Soviets…

Narratio28 Aug 2018 7:54 p.m. PST

The answer here would be "almost any rule system you want to use"

Basing is not the issue. It's what you want that base to present. Does a base of figures or a vehicle equal 1, 5, 10, figures or bases?

You could use these models for something old boardgame'ish like Panzerblitz (oh my youth!). In which case each vehicle or infantry base is a platoon of whatever it is.

We stayed with Ver3.0 FOW rules playing both 15mm and my collection's 20mm thus avoiding the changeover crisis. Never advanced to the recent Ver4.0 set. They still haven't come close to the shear volume of material from Ver3.0 books… and even more dating back to Ver2.0 and Ver1.0 old BF .pdf and scenario write ups (saved over the years since 2004). Several games posted on the Wargamerabbit blog from a summer 2018 worth of Eastern Front 1942 into 43 large battles scenario gaming. Last weekend's scenario was taken from an AH Panzerblitz scenario…."Soviet Counterattack to Kharkov August 1943"… as Narratio mentioned.

I don't think there are any other WWII rukesets out there.

Narratio's close, I think. You can go to any stand-removal system, one FOW stand equaling whatever under the new system--often a squad or platoon, but sometimes more. Roster systems are even more adaptable, but require bookkeeping. What you can't do well with FOW armies are individual-action games like Bold Action. Also, as you shift the scale of the game upward, you'll start needing things which are "off table" in FOW.

What size battle do you have in mind?

Tiberius28 Aug 2018 10:43 p.m. PST

Look up rapid fire. You will not regret it, great set of rules

TacticalPainter0128 Aug 2018 10:52 p.m. PST

Any set is usable. For games like Chain of Command or Bolt Action you just need a way to mark casualties on the stand. A micro dice would do that simply. I started playing Chain of Command with stands of three figures that I had for Crossfire and used this method quite satisfactorily until I decided to rebase individually.

You could look at I Ain't Been Shot Mum (Too Fat Lardies) if you want an alternate set of company based rules and these would play perfectly well with FoW bases.

wrgmr128 Aug 2018 11:07 p.m. PST

Second vote for Rapid Fire.

Jcfrog28 Aug 2018 11:38 p.m. PST

Yes IABSM by all means. Can be roughly the same scale ( you can even rather use a half FOW squad for a squad, enlarginging your forces and keeping the forces foothold realistic ( with counters for casualties half hidden underneath).
Chalkenging, fun and finally way closer to the decisions those officers had to get into back then.

Dexter Ward29 Aug 2018 2:40 a.m. PST

Battlefront WW2. You can keep your existing basing since those rules use a squad for each base.
Very nice set of rules with good integration or armour and infantry, and the best treatment of WW2 artillery I've seen in any set of rules.

Bezmozgu729 Aug 2018 3:49 a.m. PST

I use FOW-based figures with Battlegroup and Force on Force and they work fine.

Here is a battle AAR, FoW basing, Rapid Fire! rules.

It would be helpful to know why you don't like FoW so as to suggest alternatives. Or maybe you just want to try something new?

Rapid Fire, Fistful of TOWs and Panzer Korps are not 1:1. A stand represents a platoon or company. So armies look and feel very different.

I my own variant of FoW based on V3 called Flames of Awesomesauce:

Chain of Command is better than their Mum game

Fireball Forward can use FoW stands and figures as is. Pkayed at East Coast cons for a few years now. Highly recommended.

BuckeyeBob29 Aug 2018 1:07 p.m. PST

Another set of rules not mentioned is Battlegroup Panzergrenadier. Bases are squad or teams so no rebasing your FOW forces.

Chain of Command, hands down.
Outstanding game, incredibly versatile and easy to pick up and adapt to whatever you're looking for.

kabrank30 Aug 2018 5:39 a.m. PST

We use Battlegroup Panzer Grenadier [actually current version is Panzer Grenadfied Delux to avoid confusion with another more recent Battlegroup rule set]

Some f our players use FoW bases and all works nicely

Thomas Thomas30 Aug 2018 9:12 a.m. PST

We use platoon as the atomic unit in Combat Command so a FOW base can easy represent such a unit. No figure removal – you take off the whole platoon so no need to make individual figure "change". Can be played using Battalion Battle system for evenly matched pick up games (like FOW) or for historical scenarios.

Never played Flames of War, but I love their basing format so I have always bought FoW figures and used them as-is for IABSM and Troops, Weapons & Tactics (both by Too Fat Lardies).

Mike Target31 Aug 2018 9:29 a.m. PST

Ive heard that Crossfire is very good…but I havnt tried it yet, but it looks like it might be compatible with FOW-based troops.

TacticalPainter0131 Aug 2018 3:39 p.m. PST

Crossfire is a good game with some very innovative mechanics, but also with some limitations. In my opinion it works very well for infantry combat in close terrain, so ideal for urban battles or something like Normandy. The armour rules are less satisfactory and I would be inclined to restrict their use to one or two AFV in support.

One base of three figures = one squad. Platoon commanders should be individually based. There is no real standard basing size as long as your basing is consistent.

The fact there are no measurements and no turns makes for some very tense and exciting games. Unfortunately other than a few active blogs and a Yahoo group the rules don't get a lot of support, which is a shame.

TMP link Has a listing of rules separated by scale. Some of the links are out of date even though rules like Command Decision Test of Battle are still in print. Also, there are many rule sets that are not listed. PanzerKorps, Division Commander, Blitzkrieg Commander are several that are not listed
