Figures are from Eureka miniatures. These are dressed in mixtures of uniforms and sailor clothing. Some are wearing naval jackets which I painted a plain blue. The majority are in regimental coats with sailor trousers. I painted the coats a drab brown with red facings to match the deserter descriptions. I really liked the drab brown I mixed. Accoutrements were white belts, with haversack and canteen. All pretty standard.

For the regimental colors I went with Washington's recommendation of a Grand Union flag with another in the regiments facing color and a device. For the regimental color I used a red flag from the Gostelowe collection with the mailed fist as that was a early symbol of Massachusetts. The Grand Union type has a New England line tree which again represent New England.

Nice work.

Very nice.

They look very nice. My only suggestion would be to avoid the blue canteens, which apparently are a later fashion. It is my understanding that most wooden canteens from this time period were left unpainted.

Historygamer, many thanks for the article. I would like to do a little bit more research but you have made a very good point. One that I will be following in the future.

I suspect my painting the canteens on all my Rev War regiments either blue or red comes from two not very correct assumptions. The first is a carry over from my War of 1812 regiments. Pretty good documentation for that. The second is from my days as a reenactor (1972 to about 1987) and with NPS (retired in 2005). Blue or red (very dark) were the standard at that time. Well, time matches on and we learn more as new sources and better material becomes available to us. Again many thanks for pointing this out.

I'd lean more toward the red if painted, but I have noticed a strong trend on the doodle side for plain wooden canteens and the surviving ones seem to bear that out.

You are right though, by Nappy wars/1812 they seem to be painted and the light blue color seemed in use for that. It could be the light blue is actually light grey too, but I am not expert on 1812 stuff so I'll defer to others.

historygamer – great link!

I would think thta red (i.e., "red lead") paint might be a good available choice that would help seal the wooden canteen against leakage.

Personally I paint my drum style canteens brown and my bottle style a tin color.

Having just this morning finished painting the 26th Continental Regiment I hope I can be excused for painting their canteens blue I guess I will have to redo them :(

Not the first time I have had to redo a regiment. After posting here I was sent better documentation for the 13th Continental Regiment. I had to redo the facings and am working on a more correct flag. I will post the results when done.🍻

Well done, Sir. Are those the flags I sent?

Yes, indeed they are.
