Does anyone know which 8 companies of the French Gendarmerie were at Blenheim? Thanks, Terry |

I'm pretty sure that all 16 companies of the Gendarmerie de France were at Blenheim. In time of war, with extra noble volunteers filling out the ranks, each company was about 80-100 strong, and these were were habitually paired together to form eight large squadrons in which they served tactically. Confusingly, sometimes these double company squadrons were still referred to by some contemporary commentators as 'Companies', but they seem to have meant the double company unit. Some of the junior companies within the Gendarmerie were actually titled Chevaux-Legers, recalling a long obsolete medieval distinction of mounted troops. But in the c18th, the Chevaux-Legers companies were mounted and equipped exactly the same as the companies entitled to call themselves Gendarmes proper- ie all were heavy battle cavalry. Hope that helps. |
