Did You Serve in the Military?

48% said "No, I did not serve "
39% said "Yes, I volunteered"
5% said "I attempted to volunteer but was rejected for medical reasons"

Vigilant27 Aug 2018 1:29 p.m. PST

Oh yes I did.

wrgmr127 Aug 2018 1:37 p.m. PST

Yes, Canadian Navy.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP27 Aug 2018 1:40 p.m. PST

And another 4% were conscripts, who also served. Another 1% contractor and 1% rejected for non-medical reasons. So 48% did not serve and 50% either served attempted to serve and were rejected, with 4% "other" or "none."

Me? Air Guard under threat of conscription, Air Guard past that point--11 years and change total--14 years regular Army (Korea twice, Germany, Fort Campbell, Fort Hood and the Pentagon) and 12 years with a defense contractor.

Not sure about which uniform for the viewing.

Rudysnelson27 Aug 2018 2:05 p.m. PST

6 years Army Reserve
But somehow feel disappointed,
as Jody never did take my Cadillac

But now that I think about it,
Jody did get my girlfriend though
But found a much better one a couple of months later
Together 32 years now.

Phil Hall27 Aug 2018 2:59 p.m. PST

Yes, volunteer. Served 1960-1965 (enlistment was
extended by the government since I was in a critical
skill…)

Buck21527 Aug 2018 7:01 p.m. PST

4 years, U.S. Army. Wanted to serve longer, but got disabled. Remember what acronym "U.S. Army" stood for on our uniforms? "Uncle Sam Ain't Released Me Yet", and backwards: Yes My Retarded Ass Signed Up"…

Fish28 Aug 2018 12:01 a.m. PST

What about mandatory stints?
In Finland you do not volunteer…

Mike Target28 Aug 2018 2:21 a.m. PST

No, I'm a military fan, not a warrior.

Private Matter28 Aug 2018 5:13 a.m. PST

Serve? I don't know if I could call it serving. I just played a lot in the water (especially at night) and went on a number of camping trips to odd places:

Rejected for one reason or another, mainly either physical,or educational(I only had a GED certificate)Registered for draft at 18,never called in. Likely would've been a 4-F,in any case.

Green Tiger28 Aug 2018 6:50 a.m. PST

Was in the cadets – fun but enough to show me that I was not cut out for life in the forces…

Private Matter,
I see you list you address as Onslow county? I spent some real enjoyable hours playing in the sand and water there in 67.

Semper Fi to you Russ. Onslow Beach is still a decent place to hang out since you don't get the tourist like some of the other beaches. And I guarantee that you would not recognize Jacksonville at all.

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP29 Aug 2018 7:56 p.m. PST

Jacksonville and ocean side, back in my day -- were really a piece of work? Bars, tattoo parlors, hucksters selling everything under the sun to "boots" -- I actually fell for the big bible while in Pendelton--- my boot camp picture on the inside cover with some comment of love and devotion to my mom. Payed triple the value or more, but when my mom passed away it was still beside her bed so it was money well spent.
I am sure the two USO clubs that were in them towns are long gone?

Private Matter30 Aug 2018 6:16 a.m. PST

Russ – The USO by the New River is still there and still in use. Shirley's V-Bar is still there although not as busy as it was back when I had my first 'legal' drink. I came close to falling for a jewelry sales pitch until one of my ITS instructors happened to walk by and told me to "stop being a dumb-a** boot."

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP30 Aug 2018 12:53 p.m. PST

PM, great talking about stuff from so long ago. It seems some things never change? I remember the USO at new river as a big white wooden structure with the river in the back --- a big porch -- the USO at Pendelton was not far from the back gate -- I think actually in San Clemete?? I totally forgot "Shirleys place" – had a few interesting experiences there??? So long ago my memories have so faded -- Especially the Lejeune/NC memories, as I only spent about 6 months there --- the rest of my time out west and in the Pacific, Nam, etc -- and my last year of 6 at the Marine Barracks in Keflevick Iceland.
Mustered out from Philadelphia Naval base in June 73 -- what a 6 year ride it was !!!!
You ?? Still in, how long?
You wanted to be "a recon ranger, you want to live the life of danger." 😊
I salute you and thank you for your service to keep us safe!! Russ
