Oh man, that is lovely. So good to see the guard attack being modelled for a change. And I have had fun spotting the various manufacturers. Good groundwork as well. Thanks Armand |

Glad I am not the only one puzzled. There have been doubts expressed as to how significant was the "Hollow Way" in reinforcing Hgmt but little doubt that it did exist and was probably much deeper than the dimple we see now. The current digging shows that well. I assume that is what is meant anyway. The Braine l'Alleud to Ohain Road is correctly shown as a shallow sunken road (see image 16 for example) but not the massive obstacle of Hugo legend. If you want to see surviving sunken roads take the walk from Papelotte/Smohain to La Belle Alliance. You start that about 1ofeet below ground level! (You can "walk it" on Google Earth)

And looking at contemporary prints the area around the crossroads was massively undercut – there are first hand accounts of cavalry leading their horses down on foot. So I think the sunken roads were a feature of the battle (not Hugo of course, as DH points out above). Marc |

If you stand at the Gordon Monument, to this day, you gaze down onto the main road (Brussels/Charleroi). That slope is the one remnant that survived the creation of the mound. (because the monument was already there). That is a steep drop that I have never been tempted to descend, other than by the steps, and very thought provoking.

A fantastic effort and a lot of work. It is nice to see Hougoumont's woods and orchards represented for once as they were a dominating tactical factor. I do not know what ground scale is represented as in my opinion the distance between Hougoumont and La Haye Saint seems very big compared to the reality, once again a major tactical factor. There seems to be a composite action going on but I would respectfully suggest a lot more casualties would be present than that shown. Visually very impressive and very well done. Best wishes, Chris |
