The hobby brands are well known, but what about the other stuff? Which of the following have been most satisfying to use for gaming purposes?

a) Americana
b) Apple Barrel
c) Craftsmart (Michael's proprietary brand?)
d) Delta Ceramcoat
e) Folk Art
f) Martha Stewart
e) ?

Pictors Studio25 Aug 2018 9:34 a.m. PST

D. By far.

Ragbones25 Aug 2018 9:42 a.m. PST

A, D and E. I find Apple Barrel and AC Moore's house brand, "Nicole's", to be a bit too thin for my tastes. I've always been very happy with Americana, Delta Ceramcoat and Folk Art.

I agree with Ragbones. The others I use sparingly. Some of the Apple Barrel paints are too thin. Various reds and yellows don't cover well.

A.B, D &E are my primary ones. The Joann's brand is basic crap, it doesn't cover at all in my experience.

D & E have the highest pigment content and the highest prices. Of course they are cheap compared to hobby paint

+1 for D

Where can you by Ceramcoat these days? I used to get it at Michael's?

D. Covers well, though lighter and brighter colors may require a second coat over black primer.

JoAnn Fabrics also has a lot of Ceramcoat

hocklermp525 Aug 2018 3:13 p.m. PST

Ceramcoat is best. I buy mine from "Holcraft" online after going to all the craft stores in the area searching for particular colors that were either out of stock or not carried. Fast service plus Holcraft carries all brands. Agree Apple Barrel very thin.

Whatever the craft store has on sale … evil grin

Rich Bliss26 Aug 2018 3:04 p.m. PST

I only use Ceramcoat and Dick Blick any more. They're the only ones which I find cover consistently.

ancientsgamer26 Aug 2018 7:26 p.m. PST

+6 Aileene's was made by ceramcoat folks and not available any longer. The ceramic type paints are highly pigemented.

nevinsrip27 Aug 2018 3:06 a.m. PST

I use them all.

Cacique Caribe27 Aug 2018 6:05 a.m. PST

D. Ceramcoat

Dan
PS. But I use some of the others if I can find the right color in Ceramcoat. I try to follow some of these tips, to improve their quality:

hehehehehe …

Thresher0127 Aug 2018 8:00 p.m. PST

Excellent.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I've used craft paints for some of my 1/300th aircraft. Worked well, and was easier to match colors than with other options.

Also used them on my 1/2000th Age of Sail ships – had a nice, ochre color, right out of the bottle. Was from one of the better range above.

Can't recall which paint ranges I used now, but some of the above.

rampantlion28 Aug 2018 7:27 a.m. PST

I would say D, but I do get a wild variation in pigment quality and coverage from bottle to bottle.

Chgowiz28 Aug 2018 7:49 a.m. PST

Americana has been my go-to paints for ten years.

Delta Ceramcoat has a different consistency than Americana, but I like them as well.

Folk Art is OK, as is Apple Barrel, but my mileage has varied with them. I'm less impressed by Apple Barrel, which is why it would go at the end.

goragrad28 Aug 2018 10:21 a.m. PST

abde – mostly d.

Have one bottle of folk art 'Thicket' (dark green) that is a bit of a disappointment coverage wise, but other colors that I have seem to do reasonably well.

And a g – Anita's Indoor/Outdoor.
