…Diverse Group of People. "The eleventh season of Doctor Who was already going to be momentous what with Jodie Whittaker's casting as the new Doctor, but the show's push for inclusion and representation will also extend behind the camera. Today, the BBC announced through Doctor Who Magazine the full roster of writers and directors slated to craft Doctor Who's newest season and the list, thankfully, includes a number of women and people of color, something the series has needed for some time now. In a public statement, new showrunner Chris Chibnall expressed his faith in the creative team and emphasized how the diversity of their experiences is sure to make the show stronger:…." The Tardis has finally landed in the PC Zone. |

Maybe they need to fire Kathleen Kennedy. The SJW army has officially taken over the BBC. Rolleyes. I'm sure some people think DW is still not progressive enough for not featuring a gay or cross-dressing transgender as the new Doctor. |

It had already gotten too PC. Now it has jumped the proverbial shark. |

Just out of curiosity…why does having two x chromosomes or more melanin than me make you more creative or a better writer? |

Unless Ive missed anything, I don't see any writers I recognise from earlier series, except the showrunner himself. The best diversity is a mix of old and new talents. It looks like a complete clearout. |

Haven't watched it since the 2000's. I saw they had cast a female for The Doctor role, but I did not realize they were going full-on PC. Won't be tuning into this. Thanks for the head's up. Cheers! |

If you have RetroTV, they show classic Who every day, 2 episodes on weekdays, 4 on the weekends. The weekday ones just started the 4th Doctor, weekend is showing the 6th I think. |

Hiring for the sake of diversity as opposed to hiring for the best talent is great for the PC crowd but doesn't necessarily make for a good show. This might work out but I think they should go with tried and true talent and not hiring writers of color just because they want diversity. |

I like the new direction. Leaving the closed minded reactionaries behind to grumble strikes me as justa grand thing for a rebellious doctor to do. |
Roderick Robertson | 23 Aug 2018 9:51 a.m. PST |
You seem to think that that's the *only* reason they hired people. It may be that, given a choice between two equally-qualified people, they decided to give the nod to the one who wasn't a white male. |

I think the main reason behind casting DW is too "keep things fresh." When the series was rebooted, Eccleston and Tenant made The Doctor cool and hip after decades of the role being filled by eccentric old professor types. Then Matt Smith made a big splash as the youngest Doctor ever, making young girls swoon all over. Then they went old school again with Peter Capaldi, but at least he's spry for an old man. So what do you do next to keep DW fresh and relevant in our times? Why, go for a woman of course. There can be no other logical next step in The Doctor's continuing evolution. Let's give the 13th Doctor a chance and don't be too quick to judge or dismiss her as a failure without even having seen a single episode of the new season. |

I still agree with Roderick Robertson, although my post seems not to have posted. |

Also, television is business as much as it is art, and it has to sell its product to its advertisers. Advertisers have to believe that viewers will watch the show and thus see their ads. That dynamic certainly affects hiring decisions. |

The modern series lost me sometime back; there were some good episodes such as Blink, but far too many duffers IMHO. Too much running around shouting, wielding a sonic screwdriver to fix everything & so PC, and in many ways just a sci-fi soap. I much prefer the older series which were a little more sedate and generally more thoughtful. I'm definitely still of the Pertwee/Baker era. |

I used to love Dr. Who and all of the historically based programming done by the BBC. Now everything is so overdone with their social justice agenda that it is impossible to watch. Their historical programs went from being some of the best to almost complete garbage. |

Too PC and overdone with social justice agenda? As in the suffrage and civil rights movements are too PC and overdone with social justice agenda? |

A bit disturbing that the emphasis is on the external features of the team, rather than what they are actually doing as a creative element to overcome the problems that the show developed over teh past few seasons – partially as a result of poor administration/leadership, and partiallya s a result of Matt Smith not being able to carry the show, talentwise, so the move to have companions take center stage, and then carrying that forward and not allowing Capaldi many opportunities to make the character shine. |
