Thanks very much for posting, and congratulations on your victory! While Coulmiers is a good FPW starter scenario by virtue of its size, I do wonder whether the victory conditions aren't a bit too tough for the French, and perhaps Coulmiers itself should be rated as a Village rather than a Town to make it easier to storm. Also, if it was Mike's first game, commanding raw fragile passive troops is a challenge and can be unforgiving of errors or misfortune in trying to set up an attack, whereas the Bavarians have a rather simpler task as they can largely sit tight and blast away. Anyway, I hope you both enjoyed it enough to get the 2mms out again and fight some more. I look forward to your next AAR! Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! link bloodybigbattles.blogspot.com |

I took a look at the area using Google Earth to see how the various towns and villages on the scenario map compared.. Coumiers, Epieds, Charsonville and St Peavy are all about the same size and larger than the rest of the villages. I don't know if Epieds had a major expansion since 1870 as it is rated as a village in the scenario Making it a town would probably make the scenario more difficult for the French. Of course modern day sizes may not be the same as they were in 1870. Mike's movement die rolls really hurt him at the start and throughout much of the game. He rolled a lot of very low scores and had quite a few no move or half move results. He had less than average die rolls for his movement rolls through most of the game for his troops in the center. The Bavarians do have a better chance of winning though. Placing troops in one of the forward positions, withdrawing the troops from the objective village on the left flank and moving them to the main body, and keeping the cavalry in position to guard the right flank will make it difficult for the French to achieve at least a draw. |

Hi Bill, I'm sure I used contemporary maps for the scenario and Coulmiers was larger than the other villages, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean it was much stronger defensively. I have seen the French win this scenario or come close, albeit rarely. This is a relatively small scenario and a few poor dice can make a big difference, and from what you say about Mike's poor rolls initially that was perhaps the case in your game. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it! Chris |
