"Why would anyone do 1/300 scale Napoleonic naval? Why, because it is big and awesome looking! Frankly, I've tried to do the 1/1200 ships … I really have … to small and dinky for my liking!…."

I do this too… nothing like the heft of a good 2/3 pound miniature. |

Looks awesome, I'd love to see the rules you're planning to use. They'll need to be pretty fast play for a 1:1 Trafalgar game! I always fancied Paul Hague's set from his Naval Wargaming book but have never got round to actually tying them – have you? |

Nice. Surprised to see no gunport lids. I think more rigging in this scale too. |

Problem with the larger scales is I notice the lack of crew figures and other detail. Also typical gaming abstractions like sails not aligned to the wind, missing spar damage, etc. become more noticeable to me as the scale gets larger. MH |

I agree – crew adds a lot of visual appeal at this scale, though it would take a lot of painting to fill the deck of a '74 properly.
As to sails not aligned to the wind, a lot of times the models are structured so you cannot do this… and when you can, it looks great when you are on the proper tack or reach, but looks really hoaky when you are on the opposites. I put gunport lids on my big Old Glory SOLs, but they are very prone to damage, as you generally cannot pick these ships up by the masts and it is tough to grip them by the galleries. |

As always, I am floored by the incredible models! Are there any commonly available .stl files for the sails and masts? Those sound like a huge help, and I'd be thrilled to give them a shot! |

The coolest part would be having the crew represented on the model. |

1/600 scale would be ideal, especially for frigate actions and unrated. |

There are 1/350 photoetch that is close to this scale for crew. Did not see the Langton Figures which are probably expensive anyway. Anything else out there for mass crew? |
War Artisan | 23 Aug 2018 11:21 a.m. PST |
I use a core of Langton 1:300 figures for the more recognizable crew roles (gunners and officers) but then fill out the rest of the crew with 1:300 scale architectural figures.
Obviously the little guys with briefcases and the ladies in dresses are not very useful, but since you can get a pack of a hundred for less than $5 USD, you can afford to toss a few. Or convert them: a quick trim and a little paint makes a 1:300 scale briefcase into a bucket. The little fellows meant to be seated on a bench or retaining wall make good filler for boat crews. My crews look like this:
