"In 1935, an old wooden boat was found in a lake in upstate New York. It was the USS Philadelphia – the oldest U.S. gunboat ever recovered, dating back to the War of Independence…." See here link Amicalement Armand

For a really neat experience, visit the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, VT. They build a full-scale replica of the Philadelphia. It occasionally (very rarely these days) goes out on Lake Champlain. Talking to staff at the museum one time, I was told that it's a bit like sailing a giant bathtub. link |

Interesting. Kenneth Roberts had an interesting account of the Battle of Valcour island in his novel 'A Rabble in Arms' that I read in junior high. Amusing the history one can pick up from a decently researched historical novel. |

+1 Goragard. I first saw the Philadelphia in 1969 when I was on TDY in DC. I was absolutely thrilled to see her as I had been mesmerized as a 13 year old about the Battle of Valcour Island. I had never heard of it. That as the year I read almost every novel Kenneth Roberts wrote about the F&IW and the AWI. Good stuff. H |
