Recently I paid a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. Now home to these two flags. The Mommouth Flag is now identified as a militia flag, without the word "Grenadier" appearing on the description. What I found interesting about the Forster Flag is it appears to have a large patch placed over a British Union in the canton.

It was a rather common practice to cover the Union in existing flags. See the flag for the Philadelphia Light Horse.

I have seen those colors (first time in 1955). I just thought it maybe of interest to some.

Here is a link to the museum's online accession record for the Monmouth flag.

Idunno.
The Monmouth flag just looks …. incomplete.
It's like a blank flag with "fill in the regiment" instructions.

The "Monmouth" flag is likely a "Grand Division" flag from a Continental unit, likely a Pennsylvania unit.

It's not a "Grenadier" flag as the converged Grenadier battalions didn't have flags, nor did the lights. The flags were with the parent line battalions.

If it were supposed to be a British regimental color, it would have regimental distinctions in the center.

This flag has been misidentified for decades.

The physical size and the construct of the Monmouth Flag doesn't really match those of colors carried by the Brits. as regimentals. I've always thought as Virginia Tory suggest that it was a division or some type of camp color. Looking at side by side with the Foster flag, both appear to be same size and same construction. So they may very well have shared the same use.
