Would a Zulu regiment have a distinctive-looking leader? I can't recall anything like a standard or musicians. So in game terms would there be any reason to have a distinctive 'command stand' for a Zulu regiment? |

In my case, using TSATF with RalPartha, I have a leader figure (with the big feathered headdress for each 20 man unit. Each three unit impi has a mounted leader figure and a foot commander. The mounted leader is detached and moves to join the army commander (also mounted) on a hilltop to observer the battle. The foot commander remains with the Impi. The mounted commander can only rejoin his Impi if things start going south. |

The short answer is yes. A regiment was commanded by an inDuna and higher formations by an izinduna. The Zulus also had quite a complex command structure at lower levels – there was always somebody in charge. Can't speak to their use in TSATF, I'm afraid – unlike many on here, I've never taken to them as a set of rules. |

I would add that there were no standards or musicians with the field army. |

No need for musical instruments. They used the voice. They had a fine base section, to be sure, but were a bit lacking in top tenors. |

+1 to Winston for his homage to "Zulu." Jim |

I wasn't questioning whether there were commanders, but if they would LOOK different than the troops they were commanding? |

In my collection they are better dressed. Also, the upper command level are mounted (with dismounted versions as well). |

Like VCarter, my indunas are in more formal dress, the warriors are in basic dress (ie pretty much just a loin cloth) |

In 15mm our Zulu commanders/leaders have either an upraised Knobkierie or assegai and have a leopard skin cloak. Dave WargamingMiniatures.com |

And the Induna of an Unmarried Regiment would be Married, and wear the head ring, unlike his men. |

I have plans to update my Zulu War set-up (the original being over 50 years old). I have planned what I want to do, have purchased nearly all the figures I need, but have not yet painted any, and will probably not do so until a couple of years time, partly because some of the figures I want are not yet available and also because I have two other projects which I want to finish first. My Zulu Regiments will comprise between 2 – 8 izigaba, each of 18 figures (so 36 – 144 figures in Regiment). As well as this, each Regiment will have a single figure commander (izInduna) on a round base and those with four or more izigaba will have a pair of wing commanders, on slightly smaller round bases. For major battles there will be Corps command bases (Right horn, Left horn, Chest and Reserve) each of 2 figures (Comd & bodyguard) and an overall Army command base of 3 figures. Some of these senior command figures will be mounted. I will give all of these commanders more ceremonial dress than the ordinary warriors in their units. I plan to use a slightly modified Victoria's Battles Rules. Rod |
