"A UN human rights committee has heard there are credible reports that China is holding a million Uighurs in "counter-extremism centres". Gay McDougall, a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, raised the claims at a two-day UN meeting on China. She said she was concerned by reports that Beijing had "turned the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp". China did not immediately respond…."

And the US isn't even doing it's part anymore, keeping them in solitary confinement and shackled to the floor at Gitmo for the horrendous crime of not posing the slightest threat to America.

China is an autocracy and can get away with Big Brother practices like this. It's pointless to apply our own system of liberal democratic ideals and freedoms to it. Different strokes for different folks. The Chinese are not (and have never been) individualistic as a people, believing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (i.e. the "Gung Ho" spirit), and are raised to respect authority and elder figures. If a Chinese does not exhibit these "virtues," he or she is deemed to be westernized. |
