"The video is brimful with the grandiosity that is now associated with the military under Xi Jinping: a lot of ammunition is fired, and the very latest in China's military technology — combat aircraft, a carrier battle group, long-range ballistic missiles, submarines and armored vehicles — is on full, proud, active display.

On Aug. 1 a video titled "I am a Chinese Soldier" began circulating in China and quickly went viral on social media as the country marked Army Day.

The slick, 2 min 20 second production emphasizes the personal sacrifices made by members of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), who leave their families behind to resolutely defend the nation and its claimed territory…."

Pretty much as all the United States promotional film.

They must be recruiting, I was impressed.

Recruiting? They draft – all the time. You serve, unless you are disqualified for health or other issues, or if they don't think they need more automatons.

This is why China can -in theory- have a 300+ million man army…

AmongLions14 Aug 2018 10:05 a.m. PST

StarCruiser – I don't think they have forced people into the military in decades. There is a mandatory 2 weeks of military preparedness training, in which they don't get guns or a uniform, but actually being drafted is unheard of.

The PLA shifted from a mass "human wave" army to a leaner, more professional force. The Chinese, like the Russians, actually reduced the number of people in all its branches and streamlined its force structure.

The goal of the Chinese military is geared towards "winning localized wars under high tech conditions."

My understanding is that it is an all-volunteer force now and that you have to register for the draft (like here in the US). They haven't had mandatory conscription for quite some time.

SBminisguy17 Aug 2018 8:06 a.m. PST

Nice to see they copied from the best, eh?

But seriously, the video clearly shows who the Chinese military thinks is the force to emulate and beat -- everything I see looks and feels like the US military. Not the Russians, not the Brits or the French. So if we're their benchmark, we'd better keep moving that mark higher and higher…

What gives the PLA great advantage is that they don't have to worry about such inconveniences as rules of engagement and sensitivity training for their troops. Of course if America would ever go to war again like we did in WW2, where the outcome was uncertain, such politicaly correct nonsense would disappear rather quickly.

What gives the Chinese an advantage is long term strategic planning.
They plan 30, 40 50 + years ahead. Not in terms of the next 2 elections.

They plan 30, 40 50 + years ahead.

Because "5 year plans" proved to be disastrous?
