Commodus does nort mean common but rather its opposite Words like Agreeable, Appropriate Friendly would be what the name suggests . That type of name would be a hope that its bearer would carry on the traditions of the good Emperors (Hadrain, Trajan Marcus Aurelius…) to continue the good times As we know now Commodus was the exact opposite of his name link BTW The staue shown in the second picture isa copy of a bronze depicting Marcus Aurelius . The original made in 175Ad is in the Capitoline Museums and surrives because people thought it was Constantine |
