I read somewhere that they got more sidearms then regular infantry but what is more? Give a normal infantry section had zero sidearms. How many would an airborne have? |

Side arms as in holstered pistols? It's difficult to say as weapons such as rifles, pistols and SMGs weren't shown on WE tables after early 1943. There was a discussion on another forum a recently that sent me digging through some old stuff for British Paras. The 1942 Section in a Para Platoon was authorised 6 rifles, 2 SMGs, 2 pistols, 1 Bren and 1 (modified) 2-in mortar. No indication of who had what but I'd suspect the pistols were for the two men with the support items. The next snapshot is from the Canadian Para Bn in early 1944, which showed 1 pistol, 2 Stens, 6 rifles, 1 rifle (sniper) and 1 Bren and 1 2-in mortar (airborne). Overall the Cdn Para Bn showed a total of 139 pistols for 618 all ranks, certainly not one per man, but a few more for signallers and mortarmen, plus for medical personnel. Gary |

I'd expect the pistol(s) went to the 2" mortar first, then maybe the Bren gunner, assuming that their primary weapons were in drop canisters. |
