Mr Steve has been on his travels along the Welsh border and part one of his journey took in a visit to the fortified manor of Stokesay Castle.

Ive only ever seen it from the road when passing through; it looks fascinating. Half way between a castle and a house, and fortunate to survive the civil war.

Worth a visit, I was there last year and will be in the area again next year. An incredible number of Celtic hill forts in the area, as well !

It's a really nice place – the gatehouse is a fantastic survival:

After we visited, I was looking through the materials on castles that my youngest son was working on at school and found Stokesay. The son, of course, made no reference to having seen Stokesay in his project work.

The place saw action in the Ecw, and I'm sure I've seen a lovely model of the castle in an Ecw game at a show

Saw it for first time in the early 90s. Went out of my way when in the UK in April of this year to go back and see it. Was all that I remembered – a wonderful sire.

Shrewsbury Wargames Society put on that ECW game a few years ago at the WMMS show in Wolverhampton. There are pictures in the 2009 Gallery on the WMMS website. It is a stunning model!
