…. space threats to take seriously

"Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday announced the Trump administration is laying the groundwork a new Space Force and eventually a separate military branch, dedicated to space.

While the merits of a new organization are debatable, U.S. national security space systems are vulnerable to a wide array of threats, ranging from cyberattacks and jamming to anti-satellite missiles, according to a Center for Strategic and International Studies report published earlier this year. Russia and China, and to a lesser degree North Korea and Iran, are all threatening America's military through its dependence on space.

"Given our dependence and that of our allies and partners on space, the loss of critical assets today could prove decisive to our ability to monitor critical events like missile launches or nuclear tests, or to successfully prosecute a military campaign," retired Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler, the former chief of U.S. Strategic Command, said in the forward to the report. "Urgent action is needed."…."

Unfortunately, we cannot have 'Space Marines': that name is already taken…

@d88mm1940, unless they wanted to escalate the trade war with the UK….

Should be called the United States Space Corps and operate under the US Air Force.

While Space Navy and Space Marines are catchy and nicely Sci-Fi, they would be a bit confusing for now.

It should operate under the Navy, they know how run ships.

You'd need to retain skils with reservists, right?

That'd be the United States Space Reserve….err…and they'd all be comrades…and…

If done cleverly (yeah, I know) it could be a great distraction for the US's competitors – get them to spend billions on trying to keep up with a virtually non-existent organization. Lots of CGI, blurry photos, Facebook etc posting. I hear there may be a bunch of former 20th Century Fox staff available with suitable experience.

I know some of you guys seriously think a Space Corps is silly … unfortunately your enemies don't. Why do empires fall? Because empires fail to believe in defending their borders …

Max Schnell11 Aug 2018 6:57 a.m. PST

FPR you are correct. The US needed Space "what-ever" for a long time now.

It should, but current space ops don't exactly have 20+ crew in the ship.

My guess is that the Space Force will run on the USAF model until we lose a ship due to large-crew issues that the USAF doesn't know how to deal with. My friend in the Army says we're looking at about 200 years before that happens.

Yep, both Russia and China have their version of a Space Force. I think it does make sense to call it a Space Corps, and suborn it to USAF since that would reduce the political flak for a new organization and give it an 'adult' sponsor if you will, plus many of the personnel will be drawn from USAF.

If nothing else they can make a national military space strategy that makes sense of 4-6 overlapping satellite management agencies, all of which R&D, launch and maintain their own things on their own dimes, all competing for funding and launch capacity.

The US military suffers from an overly complex Byzantine command structure. Often a commander will be in charge of several over lapping commands. There needs to be a reduction in the bureaucracy and a return to a more simple command structure. One of the basic elements of warfare is the idea of "unity of command", which means every service member of any rank works for one and only one boss. Everything "space" needs to be under one command, but it needs to be done in such a way as to reduce bureaucracy and not add to it.
