In my previous post I layered the base and carved out contours to make a stepped modular hill. Now i have started to apply the mash, a mixture of the fibre board, water and PVA. I have also glued down and grouped some Woodland scenics tree bases to make a wooded hill if required.

I use a decorators paint scraper to break the wood fibre boards in to a fine grade of material, which is much more effective and easier to lay than small broken bits of board. Offcuts are perfect for this.

The mash is best put on quite wet as it is easier to mold in to the contours. The fibre boards tend to soak up the excess liquid which has little effect on the MDF base.

The next stage is to dry thoroughly, which has been quick in our unusually hot summer in England. Once dry PVA and water are coated which make for a very hard and durable coat. The next stage will be to base coat with an earth colour.

I have also made some shellholes and used this material to base buildings. The shellholes hold a 30mm x 30mm base quite easily.
