I've got some "Barbarian" log huts to paint. They're represented as tree trunks fixed upright and roughly lashed together.

What colour would this sort of basic dwelling be? I'm thinking it would probably be a kind of grey look – what do you think?

Thanks

I've used mixes of raw umber, white, and black for weathered wood in fences, cabins, etc. Gives a "warm" grey- brown color depending on your paint proportions.

Brown fading to grey depending on the age of the hut

I'm going to try a basecoat of Krylon Camouflage Earth Brown. Then dry brush my way up through Folk Art Barn Wood.

My favorite technique for old, weathered wood fences and shacks has been to spray a light or mid-gray primer coat, tint with a brown wash, then drybrush with very light gray. Extra streaking and blobbing with the brown tint can help create weathering.

Here is a wall section of a fort that is somewhat new – a season or 2. So not all gray yet:

Here are the three colors I used:

An older fort would be all gray, so I would use three grays and dry brush up…..

Great responses gentlemen – thanks to all. I now feel reasonably confident of a passable look to the village.

I may be back with a similar question – about the straw roofs.

Thatch you say? Most people paint thatch and it has a yellowy tinge to it. I can understand why, made the same mistake myself… deep down we know it's straw, straw is yellow. Yet if you look at real thatched roofs they are a colour not too dissimilar to the caps of chestnut mushrooms. Here's my recipe for thatch

Newly thached huts would be golden light brown…

… but it wouldn't be too long before it wash brownish grey:
