The Wyoming Archeology Society is sponsoring a tour at the Rosebud Battlefield on August 18th. The tour starts at 8:30 a.m. to beat the heat. Spencer Morris, the State Park Ranger, will be leading the tour at the Rosebud Battlefield. The hike will be moderate and will be exploring the buffalo jump, petroglyphs, and Crook's Hill/ Packer's Rock. The park is located near Busby, Montana, and the non-resident fee is $6 USD per carload. Please remember to bring cash. Bring plenty of water as it will be very warm. It is recommended to bring snacks or lunch. The drive is about an hour from Sheridan so please plan accordingly. Directions to the Battlefield: From Sheridan, head north on WY-338 (Decker Road) towards Decker, MT (the road turns into MT-314 when you cross the state line). Pass the town of Decker and continue 19.5 miles. Turn left (west) on Rosebud Road and continue 1.4 miles. Turn right and park in the parking lot with the restroom and interpretive signs. Spencer will be there to meet you. Here is a link with more information: link |

Thanks for making us aware of this. Maybe some of us can make plans to attend. |

Toured this battlefield back in 1999 with author Terry Johnson as part of his Northern Plains Indian Wars tour. Great place to see and was a great tour to take--too bad Terry passed away two or three years later and before he could complete his set of Plainsman novels (which were to cover pretty much all of the Indian Wars campaigns from Ft Phil Kearny through Wounded Knee.) He did cover the period 1866 thru 1877 (Nez Perce) campaign. If you can make this tour, I'll bet you'll enjoy it. |
