For those of you who have or had a paint rack, what features and layout did you find most useful> Most ergonomic?

is there a brand or style you wouldn't buy or make again?

I'm thinking of getting one, and other folks experience would be most helpful. Thanks!

Any of those things that has spacers built in is a waste of space. So are many of the carousel models – if you can't get into the interior, the footprint itself may be taking up more space than it's allowing for actual paints.

Necessitating that every paint be visible and in single file is also pretty much overkill. I'm fine with them being 2-3 paints deep. I also to cloud my paints by color: whites go together, reds, blues, all go in their own section.

Unsegmented cascading shelves are good.

Search the internet for "nail polish rack". These are often clear acrylic tiered shelves that are just the right size for paint bottles. Can be quite cheap too!

I made mine from wooden boards, and L-shaped plastic for shelves.

Nowadays I use a multi-drawer cart. But when I had shelves I did it two ways. (1) As above, cut wood to length, cut risers, done. Cheap, efficient and flexible. (2) Use these shelf orgaqnizers but stand them up:

I got some cheap plastic racks at Walmart, that look a lot like the ones in Extra Crispy's photo. They work really well, I can put Reaper/Vallejo on them three filed deep (so each triad is grouped together.

I did add sheet plastic to the back to prevent the bottles from falling off behind the shelf.

The clear acrylic nail polish racks look like a good solution – I guess it depends how many you have to store. I pretty much only use about 25 colours so I just have them in a card tray next to me. Sometimes, as mentioned above, space savers turn out to be anything but.

@Patrick – that's an insane amount of paint to have. : )

I have a few hundred bottles of paint, going waaay back to when my husband was buying POLLY S glass jars. Really no need for the amount that we have.

#Patrick Is that a pegboard in back? And where do you find L shaped plastic racks?

I don't understand how those long shelves are not sagging very much.

I made it from two sheets of fibreboard and a pair of wooden slats, all screwed together.

I then used L-shaped PVC angle trim for corners from the DIY store, glued and screwed down. The one I use is 35mm x 35 x 260 mm I cut them down and I used four or five of them on my board and I have room to add another two if I do need it.

One of these was in a hot car for too long and warped, I had to add two supporting screws because it arches slightly.

I like these, when it's going on a shelf:

@Dragon6:

Turn them 90 degrees. So the "shelves" become the "walls." As shown the shelves are too short and overly deep for taller paints like Vallejo and craft paints.

Patrick R, Are those bookcases that you use to make your desk legs? If they are, what brand are they. I would that set up for my paint station.

I found them on discount at the local supermarket (Carrefour), they are their domestic brand, but I suppose you can find similar elements at IKEA or other furniture stores as they are meant to be desk elements (the tabletop is sold separately, I used a board for mine)
