Hi all,

I took a few year break from painting/playing Napoleonic. I've decided to start painting a bit again, namely I want to finish my Prussian collection. One thing I can't remember from their uniform is what color I used for their pack/haversacks. I use Vallejo model color. Can anyone suggest/point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

I used a brown oxide as a base, then burnt sienna as a highlight. Whatever equivalent Vallajo would be.

Keep in mind that colors , especially dark ones will fade when on campaign. So it would not be unrealistic to have some in darker blue and some in a mid blue( even in same unit). I would stick with a dark blue as a base color and then shade from there. Haversacks also go in the same way. I use Folkart or Americana acrylic paint Khaki then shade with a lighter linen/twill and then a buttermilk to hi-light . It covers well and is a lot less expensive than some of the other model paints.. and you get 2oz .. not 1/2 oz per bottle.

There was huge variation in the shade of blue. It is interesting that a huge amount of cloth came from Lancashire Mills. This was excellent and was very dark blue.

See my various books.

Currently working on Prussian Freikorps. Alas my two books on Prussian Infantry are long out of print. I will get there in the next few years to write on this subject again.

Thanks all…I'm set on what blue to use, that wasn't an issue. I'll stick with the brown I'm using, sounds like it'll be fine.
