My lichen has been stored away in plastic bags and is now kind of sticky. If I leave it out will it dry out too much? Anyone ever had this problem?

YES, I tried boiling it briefly in Glycerin (outside) and letting it dry for a week. Seems OK now. I think it works on new freshly picked Lichen as well.

I always wondered if there was some way to "plasticize" lichen, even if it ended up stiffening it up a little bit.

Well it has not dried out and is quite usable. It just feels sticky and was stuck together in a glob in the bag.

True story

I had a box of lichen, it was totally dried out. I left in my closet and forget it. Several years later the water heater burst and flood our basement. After a week of clean I found the box had burst and the Lichen had tripled in size.

Have always used glycerin to refresh lichen. Never
boiled it, though.

I've used glycerin and hot water, but not too hot, because the dye in the lichen will leach out. The heat opens the "pores" in the lichen to absorb the glycerin.

The current lichen I use had this done 25-30 years ago and is still fresh and spongy.
