Have you ever gone on a vacation with the focus of the trip being to play wargames? Perhaps meeting a friend or friends somewhere, or going to a gaming center?

14th NJ Vol06 Aug 2018 3:25 p.m. PST

I've gone to Historicon, considered that a vacation to the 5 I've been too. Most 6 day trips.

Timbo W06 Aug 2018 3:26 p.m. PST

Not war-games per se but walked Hadrians Wall with a wargaming friend.

Dynaman878906 Aug 2018 3:40 p.m. PST

I've had stay-cations for wargaming.

John Armatys06 Aug 2018 4:20 p.m. PST

Yes, I go to the Conference of Wargamers every year and occasionally I've gone to big wargames a good distance from home.

JimDuncanUK06 Aug 2018 4:28 p.m. PST

I've gone to Crisis in Antwerp, Belgium from Edinburgh in the UK several times.

We've often fitted in a trip to a museum or two or a battlefield (Waterloo or Bastogne).

One year we even took some of our wives and did a bit of tourism.

Never. My vacations are always to disconnect from everything I do or obsess about the rest of the year. I usually turn off my phone and don't even check emails until we are about to fly back.

My primary focus on vacations is to make sure my wife has a blast during every second of the trip.

Of course. Cold Wars. Historicon. Fall In. The SYWA Convention, and sometimes Little Wars. If someone would just build a wargame center in the US, I'd strongly consider it.

If you build it, they will come. Some of them, anyway.

Several family vacations were set up to coincide with us being in PA around Historicon. We drove from SoCal and stopped at the OK Corral, The Alamo, Deadwood, New Orleans, among other places. Chose different routes each time to see different things. Everyone had a great time.

I've taken vacation specifically to go to gaming conventions.

Used vacation time to go to Cons

My wife and I got a room at a hotel near a convention once after we decided that it would be more fun to stay up late playing than to drive home and drive back the next day.

Does that count?

Just got back from a board game vacation with the guys.

Bashytubits06 Aug 2018 9:17 p.m. PST

No, but I have wanted to.

Timmo uk07 Aug 2018 1:57 a.m. PST

No but I've visited battlefields.

Our yearly trip to Salute is usually a Wargaming vacation, when we visit a museum or interesting place on Friday and then do Salute on Saturday. Same for my trips to Fall In which were more extensive holidays.

Vigilant07 Aug 2018 4:11 a.m. PST

Went to the US in 2007 specifically to go to Fall-In as part of the trip. Other trips have been to visit museums, historical sites and battlefields.

We have a prefab house on a lake. Have hosted multiple long gaming weekends, and also painting weekends with my father in the winter.

Sundance07 Aug 2018 6:31 a.m. PST

Just weekend ASL tourneys in my younger days.

I went six times to the MegaGame weeks in Cornwall – each time it was 6 straight days of massive 1/300 wargames with 50 gamers refighting campaigns from WW2. Dominic Fielder was the prime organiser of these and he has a blog with some old photos on them: megagame-holidays.blogspot.com

They don't organise these anymore as there was a steady fall off in attendee numbers – perhaps if you all contact Dominic (he is also on Facebook) he will be tempted to put them on again :-)

P.S. I flew all the way from South Africa to go to these games (although a couple of times I came from Dubai as I was working there for a while)

Was in London one year on business, took a few days off at the end of it, went up to Scarborough to the Wargames Holiday Centre at the time. Arrived Friday, checked in to the B&B I was staying at, went to the pub for the briefing for the game over the weekend. we did the Battle of Bautzen. Fabulous time!

As above, I would count going to a con (including taking time off work for the early pre-day) as a vacation for wargaming.
