So here's a first look at what you get in the Beginner's Box

and the Boxed Set.

The Beginner's set is pretty striped down and only has the introductory rules. I guess KISS is its byword.

The Boxed Set has the full rules for the game… well, at least for mechs.

Both have a mix of plastic mechs and cardboard stand-ups so you do get a nice mix of mechs with both sets. I'm not very happy with what appears to be lower quality mapboards (poster paper), and I can see why with the Beginner's set but not so much with the more deluxe box set.

Here's a review on the 9 new plastic mechs.

I am happy to see the introduction sets reaching back to 3025 and the Succession Wars which is THE classic period for the game. I'm OVER THE MOON to see that Bill Keith wrote a short story bit of fluff to support the game! And it's a prologue that follows the Grey Death Legion's predecessor: Carlyle's Commandos! I wonder if we get to see Grayson as mechwarrior apprentice! Pretty sweet.

Sadly the previewer is saying that we won't see either set until 4th Quarter 2018…

So what do you think?

Great review. That Thunderbolt looks fantastic! I always thought that was the ugliest of the old 14, the new one is nice.

I like the Locust too.

And yeah, 3025 and the Succession Wars. I saw somewhere about the Keith story, if I get the chance to read that, I am sure I will enjoy it.

It's worth getting one, to me, to get that story. I'm thinking about getting a pair of beginners to use in my class and a boxed set for me to keep. Battletech was a hit with my 6th Graders and the intro beginners set is perfect for a math based center in my classroom.

Its certainly a game for math, ha ha.
