Very interesting; I also read the comments on the blog. The site is spectacular and readily accessible, despite being in a state of considerable disrepair and potentially quite hazardous, with the underground casemates for the cannon not blocked off, although some of the side passages are restricted by locked gates. One thing I have noticed about France is that they don't baby you on the historical sites (which is good). If you want to go somewhere interesting but also dangerous, you often can. In the USA, that's not the case, perhaps due to potential lawsuits. MH |

On the day we were there, there were two squaddies on some sort of exercise at the top of the cliff. They were very nice and even showed us the best way to clamber down the slippery, near vertical rock ramp to the fort. They weren't at all bothered by a bunch of tourists climbing all over a collapsing, rusty, half demolished bit of military property complete with deadly fall and trip hazards everywhere! |
