I am Custer battlefield today. And of course there are a million books to chose from. I have several already – is there a recommendation for a "must have?" even if you have others. Also -I see two books on Tom Custer. Which is best: * Tom Custer: Ride to Glory * The other Custer |

His own book is worth reading "My life on the Plains" |

Not a bio, but one of my all time favorites about the battle is "The Mystery of E Troop" by Greg Mincho. |

Robert Utley's book on Custer--I think it was titled Cavilier in Buckskin. |

Agree with the Last Stand. Very interesting. |

But the question asked was what is "the best book on Custer". Both "Son of the Morning Star" and "Last Stand" are good reads, neither is "on Custer"; they are about the Battle of the Little Bighorn (ie,. Custer's Last Stand", but not truly about Custer. Thus, my vote for Utley's book about Custer, Cavalier in Buckskin. |

Korvessa – LtC Custer and the fight on the Little Horn river are full of controversy. Some fairly smart people on all sides, along with the usual fan baoys. My advice is to just read whatever you can find about the subject. Then like myself (after 50 years of study and a few visits to the site) you'll know nothing for a scientific certainty, but you'll have a foggy idea of what happened. I have come to believe that when studying this battle the journey is its own reward and there is no fanality to the study. One of the few times in my life I have resolved to live w/o closure. Enjoy the ride. |

There are so many good books on this subject that it's hard for me to choose, but I don't think you can go wrong reading Mincho. Another book not yet listed above, that I enjoyed reading, is The Fights On The Little Horn. |
