Lol. I don't buy it.

But then again … how many inventions were conceived and tried independently from each other, and simply never got anywhere because of lack of sponsorship or investment? We might never know.

I don't see a chain, so it's not what we think of as a bicycle. It's probably a small wheeled vehicle that runs on whatever powered the vimanas.

Maybe they had a bicycle race called the Vimana 500.

"Not shown on the bike are the JATO rocket pods, which dropped off after the bike got up to speed."

Judging from the clothing of the female cyclist, the carving is much more modern than they claim (she's showing knees, for pete's sake… ;-)

The article itself notes the alternative modern explanation.

Of course with Snope reinforcing that, it probably is 2000 years old.

The original push bikes did not have a chain. You pushed and the balanced on the frame

There is also supposed to be a carved relief of a Greek Goddess on a skateboard/scooter, but I can't track it down these days.

Bsrlee: "a Greek Goddess on a skateboard/scooter"

I bet she didn't ride it over bumpy cobblestones.

On the one hand the artist could have left out the chain, the same way they left out the brakes.

On the other hand, I'm trying to figure out how you could make something that would inspire that particular carving if you didn't have metal working. If you weren't concerned with rolling resistance you could make something that would work out of wood, but it would be much bulkier and thus the artist's depiction wouldn't look like this.

Snopes has addressed it, of course.

In the end we are faced with two explanations that don't involve time travel.

1 – someone built a modern-looking bicycle 2000 years ago and while it was successful enough to be recorded in the temple the technology was abandoned

2 – the carving was added later

Obviously, Occam tells us to go with the latter.
