Traveller was the #1 answer (18%) – TMP link

Tied for 2nd place were Savage Worlds and Rogue Stars.

Tied for 4th place were 7TV and 5150: Fringe Space.

It wasn't my vote, but it is hard to go wrong with Traveller!

Since there is a strong evidence that it began as a Traveller campaign, I can't see why you would use anything else.

I'd like to use something that got the tech development a little closer.

In what way?

Remove the FTL and it seems pretty dang close.

Gravitics.
Slugthrowers are common, but lasers exist.
AI isn't really a player.

If you cap the tech level at about 10 or 11, it would seem almost perfect.

5150 Fringe Space (Two Hour Wargame) has a very Firefly feel to it.

I thought the whole 'space western' thing would blow, but how wrong I was when I actually saw it! And pretty much my first thought was this is Traveller the TV series. And it appears that may not be entirely coincidence. So yeah I'd use Trav for a game set in the 'Verse. Granted there may be a few things in Trav tech wise that might not feel right – but I'd bet they're all the things 70's and 80's sci-fi RPGs got wrong anyway.

Joss played the hell out of traveller while he was in college.
(Well, he never specified traveller, but he did mention an SF rpg that had all the archetypes and the main one of the time would have been traveller.)

Explains why it gets so stale half way through, too.

(couldn't stand traveller, tbh – but then cp2013 was my first rpg)
