Hey all,

I'm prepping for a trip to Florence and Venice and am looking for anything military museum related that ya'll may have heard of or travelled to. I posted here because I figure there will be a ton on the Renaissance in both cities and maybe there is a museum devoted to some of the military campaigns? I'm all ears. Any and all recommendations welcome.

Thanks!

Jared

There is a good archeology museum in Florence. Good for Etruscans if that is any interests?

Excellent Naval museum in Venice. Lovely models there. The Doge's palace is worth a look too, lots of weapons I seem to remember.

Mind you, It's been 27 years since I was there…………

There is a museum concerning the Battle of Anghiari in the town of the same name, but it is about an hour and a half from Florence.

Venice
Naval museum, with a Gardner gun.
Also yes the Palazzo and the siege of Venice in 1849. Austrian congreve rockets nd bombing by drone ballons which were Italian in soul as they came back to fall on the Kaiserlicks.

I can second the Stibbart Museum in Florence. Fabulous collection of armour and weapons.

If you are driving between Florence and Venice you might want to take a side trip to Ferrara. It is on the way and a great place with most of its city wall still in place as well as the ancestral castle of the D'Este family in the middle of town. Lucrezia Borgia ended her days as the wife of the Duke of Ferrara.

I'd second the Doge's palace in Venice. They have a large collection of bladed weaponry, and some nice suits of armor (including one belonging to a French king). There are also some excellent huge paintings on military themes in the old government chambers, including a particularly good one on the battle of Lepanto.
