Its a fact that the Israelis were the second biggest user of the M113 outside the US. However I am beginning to think that this was the case after the 73 war . I am looking for info on the M113 in service for any of the Southern units based in the Sinai during the 73 war. So far I can only find evidence with pictures of one unit based in the North and probably many of these would have been captured from the Jordanians during the 67 war. I know if the info is out there one of you will know . Many thanks |

My reading indicates that active duty units had the 113s, while reserve units had half tracks. This would seem to indicate that in '73, half tracks outnumbered 113s. |

Some regular units ended up with halftracks, especially leg units. A friend of mine who served in Para Bn 202 said that they showed up in Tasa (assembly area behind the front) and were simply parceled out to halftracks, 113s, whatever happened to be available. Later he rode in a 113, but mostly M3s. He said the 113s were loaned from mechanized units. the Drivers were not paras. |

Yes, the IDF did use M113s in the '73. As well as versions of the old M3 Halftrack. He said the 113s were loaned from mechanized units. the Drivers were not paras. Yes we did the same in the US 101, '80-'83. Hitching a ride on M113s & M60 MBTs. And later when I was with 3 Mech Bns, '84-'90, we'd give "Leg" units a ride … Including some USMC … |

When my family we to Israel, we saw 3 or 4 big(and I mean BIG)lots with many score half tracks. Also many M113's(but not nearly as manyas half tracks). That whole country seemed to be on a war footing, and this was 2004. |

In 1973, 450 M-113 versus 4000 half-tracks available. 87th recon in the Sinai, 75th mechanized infantry on the Golan are the only units I know of that had M-113. They were commonly used as command vehicles too. I believe some of the school infantry units may have used M-113 also. |

Many thanks everyone for your kind assistance here and personal accounts . The unit in the Golan is the one I know about already and have pictures confirming that it used them. The 87th Recon in the Sinai is the new one for me and IIRC the unit also had a couple of companies of M60s ( Magach 6s). I will check this in my notes when I get home and if confirmed will be a potentially interesting unit for Fate of a Nation Thanks again |
