"In a country where good news stories about the military are few and far between, recent years have been kind to the German Navy ( Deutsche Marine). Its vessels had been participating with its allies in counter-piracy operations like Operation ATALANTA off East Africa, and its ships have been involved in refugee rescue in the Mediterranean Sea as well as weapons interdiction off the coast of Lebanon. Pictures of German Navy vessels assisting in the rescue of bedraggled refugees portrays the public face of the Bundeswehr in a way no Eurofighter or Leopard 2 tank ever can…."

Germany is content to let Russia have its geopolitical sphere-of-influence and has consistently opposed NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia. It is still operating in the "peace dividend" mode of the 1990's where defense spending is given low priority because Germany does not believe that Russia is expansionist in spite of its takeover of the Crimea, which it believed to be the predictable result of NATO overreach.

By keeping its military toothless, Germany is sending a clear message that it is unwilling to take on a leadership role in NATO or "ruffle the feathers" of Russia, partly because it relies on Russian gas but also partly because it sees no threat from Russia to its own security.

I wonder if any old DDR loyalists are making or at least influencing those kinds of decisions.

*cue in the obligatory "the Germans already spend too much on defense already and they spend even more on NATO than the US" poster in 3, 2, 1…*

With the RPMs you can get from Donitz spinning in his grave, you should be able to generate enough power to replace all the Russian gas… Assuming that the generators don't explode first!

This state is criminal. "These parts are too expensive!" So is building 6 submarines that you can't deploy! *evil*

We recently visited Germany.

I assume I will be "dog housed" if I say what we saw over there, but when you get off a plan, and my husbands good friend tells us there are area's we would be foolish to visit…that country will be a slum in 5 years. The US would be stupid to leave nukes in that country.

Ain't this "new world order" GRAND!?!

Germany has the best economy in Europe. Bleeped text to decide the merits of a country based on its defence spending is moronic.

Germans anti militaristic viewpoint based on it's contribution to two worlds wars is hardly surprising. Particularly after loosing both. The necessity of NATO to counter the Warsaw pact was one thing. The demise of the Warsaw PACT may allow the Germans to decide for themselves how much they should spend Deleted by Moderator

The US needs to relocate all our forces from Germany to Poland. Germany's problems are now internal.

I recently visited Germany. Prosperous, peaceful & happy.

Much of the world should aspire to be as successful as Germany.

I have to disagree with Tango01. German food is often stodgy.

Lion in the Stars28 Jul 2018 5:36 p.m. PST

Good German food is outstanding. Average German food is OK.

Bad German food is really bad.
