Do you believe that for at least some people (i.e., Alexander the Great), there is a predetermined course of events controlled by an irresistible power or agency?

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART24 Jul 2018 1:01 p.m. PST

Nope, no way.

That's why I bring my troops to the table, form them up, and just sit there.

If I'm destined to win, I don't have to bother with the moving and fighting. And if I'm destined to lose, I'm not going to bother either with the moving and fighting.

So far, it doesn't look like I've ever been destined to win. :)

Destiny is an after the fact observation.

Her?

No. She usually says things that come true, but in a way that it isn't what you expect, so the advice she gives is pretty much useless.

… or …

Destiny of the Endless? Yep. He's got his stuff together

[Assume I made some stripper name joke here.]

Controlling Fate as a concept? No. But if you believe that the entire universe is scientifically deterministic according to fixed laws, then what will be is predetermined. In a way, the entire future, all the way to the end of eternity (whatever that means) has already happened in a way.

If I win, it is because of my "cunning plan,"
If I lose, it is due to forces beyond my control and was destined to happen no matter what I did or did not do.

Sure. All of our lives were preordained and we are but characters in a play.

Destiny! Destiny! No such thing as Destiny!

Patrick R25 Jul 2018 3:55 a.m. PST

There is a theory that every possible particle combination and state actually exists, which means that there is a version of the universe where you are its absolute overlord.

So destiny is kinda ruled out by this, you just need to find the right universe.

As to why none of us right now are overlords right is simply because the number of universes where we are mundane is a whole lot bigger than the number of universes where we are overlords. Strangely enough you can have bigger infinities than others because some include more than others.

Dynaman878925 Jul 2018 4:02 a.m. PST

Actually, the number of universes where we are overlords vs mundane should be equal. There are an infinity of both.

Still something to be said for "No fate but what we make".

parrskool25 Jul 2018 8:31 a.m. PST

I knew you'd say that.

Earl of the North26 Jul 2018 4:03 a.m. PST

No, if I believed in destiny then I'd be believing that the future is preordained and if that so, what is the point?

I knew a "dancer" named Destiny … but I don't think that was her real name … wink

Cacique Caribe26 Jul 2018 3:56 p.m. PST

Was she friends with Chastity? If so, they were equally untrue to their names. :)
