Hi all

I would like to build Cesare Borgia's guard and army in 28mm.

What figures shall I choose, keeping in mind that I like anatomically correct figures?

Is there a figure of Cesare himself?

What reference material would you suggest?

Thanks and cheers,
Peter

I did some conversions in that direction:

The Assault Group Italians for the infantry. Unfortunately they do not have gendarmes for the Italians--they have "Elmetti" (lighter armed and armored heavy cavalry).

Wargamesfoundry or Eureka will work for the Gensdarmes. Borgia himself served as Captain of a French Gensdarme company for some time. During the Romana camapaigns he also had French Gensdarmes under his command for some time.

Afaik there is no mini showing Cesare, which – given his prominence and existing portraits (even if not contemporary) – is weired, once you think about it. Perhaps he was too versatile to be captured by a single pose for his life.

Apart from that, I agree with Condottiere that TAG should be the first stop for the Romagna and Guard infantry. The Perries also have a fine line of Italians, eg for characters or archers.

Thank you all, I will look into this.

Just learned that Heroclix made a Cesare Borgia, but for their "Assassins Creed" game, so from the game, not history (and probably with soft detail and too large). Just for completness sake

I had a crack at using my collection to represent Cesare and his army a few years ago, the figures were mainly Assault Group and Perry.

I would do it differently now but here is how it looked in 2013 link

This looks great, Malatesta1500! Great looking army! What would you do differently, if I may ask?

Thanks Spoercken.

I think if I did it now I would definitely not have given the Swiss troops Cantonal Flags as I am sure they didn't carry these when serving as mercenaries.
I would have based everything differently (which I have now done)and I would have included more Italian Style infantry which I have got around to later – link

Figure wise I would have used the same miniatures though, infact there are now more choices with the Steel Fist Footknights and Perry Plastic 15th Century Light Cavalry.

A must would be Petes Borgia banners – they are fantastic: auction
