Hi,

I'm currently in the process of making several home brew army lists for Team Yankee – I've currently Got Spain, Greece and Turkey in the works and notes for a few more

Anyway I've found a few contradictions when it comes to Turkish Armour

Tank Encyclopaedia says after the trade embargo was lifted Turkey was given loads of M60s

however other sources say that it was M48A5s

so does any one know which tank(s) Turkey was using in around 1985?

I also know they had a few Leopard 1s but that seems to mostly have been used for armoured cavalry support

Cheers

Andy

Wikipedia says that they got M-60s in 1991. They fielded 3008 M-48 during the Cold War modernized to A5 standards.

Enola's "World's Major Armies: 1981" has M-48s in the tank battalions, and M-47s or M-48s in the recon battalions. "Arsenal of Democracy II" (pub. 1981) indicates 120 M-60s in Turkish service, 160 M-48s, 1340 M-47s, 200 M-41s, 64 M-24s, 36 M-26s, and 70 M-4s (Shermans). FWIW

Were those M4s upgraded to IDF standards ?

Re: M4s, I have no idea; only reporting what the researcher listed. I did find a youtube video build for the Tamiya 1/35 kit in Turkish markings. No date for the prototype was indicated; looked like a standard M4A3 with 75mm and vertical suspension. Speculating, I'd guess that (Turkey being a NATO member and having acquired a substantial number of more modern vehicles) any serviceable M4s would probably have been limited to training roles.

A Jane's reference from the '90s has no further mention of the older Turkish vehicles although Denmark (e.g.) was still using the M-41.

Thanks for the intel … The M4A3 w/75(?) at that time was not really state of the art per se. But I can see it used for training.

According to the 1974 Janes book of modern tanks, Turkey fielded main battle tanks models, M48A3, M60A1 medium- M47, light- M41. I was surprised that straight M60 were not on the list.
So this is a lot earlier than Wiki says.

Janes Armour and Artillery for 1986 says
Leopard 1A3
M41
M47
M48 / M48A1 / M48A2C
M48A5 / M48T1
M4 in reserve units

Thanks All
no M60s for team Yankee then

I really wish I had some of the older editions of Jane's or the holy grail a Military Balance 85-86

In '86 many US as well as IDF units were still using the M60 in a number various types.

Andy Tea31 Jul 2018 2:59 a.m. PST

sorry I meant no M60s in Team Yankee for Turkey
I know the US had them – I've got a company of them in my US marine army

For context – E.g. '86-'90, the Tank Bn of our separate Mech Bde at Ft. Benning, GA. Had 3 Cos. of M60A1s & 1 Co of M1IPs. AFAIK it was the only unit like that in the US Army at the time. And was part of the 18th ABN Corps.

And when I was in the ROK w/2ID, '84-'85. The 2 Tank Bns in the 1st Bde/2ID were M60A1s …

Andy Tea01 Aug 2018 2:27 a.m. PST

hmmmm ROK, that could be something tempting to make

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP01 Aug 2018 7:48 a.m. PST

1/72 & 2/72 AR were the only US Tank Bns in the ROK at that time. And still are, AFAIK.

And IIRC, in the late '70s, the US Tank Bns were still using M48A5s ? old fart

Korean War reflash would be interesting!

Especially if you add JGSDF equipment.

Rudysnelson01 Aug 2018 8:32 p.m. PST

A good Korean flashpoint would be in about 1981. The same week that the US officer was killed trying to stop North Koreans cutting down trees in the DMZ, my brothers Cobra was forced to crash land along the DMZ. He received a medal for landmark Nguyen it. Not too many cases of pilot error or equipment malfunctions result in medals. He never has been willing to talk about what made him crash. So hostile acts were common. As were tunnels being dug under the border. I actually gave Purple Hearts to soldiers in two separate incidents after having broken limbs falling into NK tunnels.

Yes, what many don't know … when you are on the DMZ, you are in a combat zone. One idiot said something about I was stationed in some little "backwater" … And I can remember some incidents when on my 2 tours on the DMZ, that never made the news, AFAIK. laugh

Well just shows why I refer to him as an idiot. He is no longer here on TMP … evil grin
