If you roll 6d6, get no hits and discover you were only allowed to roll 3d6, do you pick up 3d6 and roll?

What other conventions does your group apply to different dice complications?

advocate23 Jul 2018 2:45 p.m. PST

No. But if you roll 6D6 and get any hits – even 6 – I'd say roll again.

If your opponent roll several times and you suspect his dice are unusually lucky…what do you do?

I would probably quip 'well, I would have missed anyway!'
We normally re-roll if the wrong dice are rolled in general though as a simple and predictable policy.

I think Advocate has the right answer, but I can't recall the situation arising. OK, once when I was the guilty party, except that I rolled too many dice and scored well. We halved the effect, but looking back, I should have re-rolled even at the price of slowing the game a bit.

Group conventions:
If any die is cocked or off table, all dice are re-rolled.
Cocked die is tested by balancing an equivalent die on top, and person who wants to keep the roll attempts the balance.
Rolled dice are not picked up until the player not rolling them sees and acknowledges the result.

It's kind of like shooting craps, but you have to watch out a little more.

So:
-Roll dice so that everyone can see the roll. That is, use large enough dice and roll them in the open.

-Dice that roll off the table don't count; roll them again.

-Cocked dice (dice that end with an edge or corner up instead of a face) don't count; roll them again.

-If you rolled the wrong number of dice, they don't count; roll them again.

-Avoid rolling dice into miniatures, including terrain features, but no re-rolls for this infraction.

-Use of dice trays is encouraged, of course.

-Modified dice: I've never actually seen it in a wargame or a craps game. In a wargame, I would expect that someone on the other side would see it, and would "borrow" those dice at some point and make sure that they got mixed in with all the dice being used at the table. (In Las Vegas or Reno, the offender will be arrested immediately; in central Nevada, the offender's body will probably never be found.)

One of the problems with trying to cheat with modified dice is that different games require different rolls and different kinds of dice. Sometimes you want to roll high, and sometimes low, so you'll need at least two sets of modified dice.

If you roll "more" and get no result then no reroll, if you toll too many and get results then roll again or ignore the extra (if you roll 6d6 and get hits on every one then just count that as 3 hits)

We play that if you roll the wrong number or size of dice, it is your opponent's call whether you reroll or not.

We also play that when rolling multiple dice, if one is cocked they all must be rerolled. This includes any die not lying flat on the playing surface.

Also you must make it clear that you are rolling and ensure that your opponent can see the results.

Not as onerous as it sounds and we have never had a dice-related argument.

Just be gentle and trat the dice with respect.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART23 Jul 2018 3:33 p.m. PST

…treat.

coopman23 Jul 2018 3:42 p.m. PST

If he rolled 6d6 and got no hits, heck no I would not let him re-roll.

PJ ONeill23 Jul 2018 3:44 p.m. PST

We designate a box or dice tray, if any bounce out, or cocked, ALL are re-rolled.

If I rolled 6 dice and missed, I would feel like I was cheating if i rolled 3 to "make it right".

Agree with Winston and the above – you roll 6 and come up dry, you come up dry

If you roll too many and miss, you also rolled the right number of dice and missed, then rolled some extras.

If I missed on six dice where I needed to roll three, I would likely say, "Well, it looks like I missed the next one, too."

If you roll too few, just roll the extras, not the whole lot

If your opponent roll several times and you suspect his dice are unusually lucky…what do you do?

I am good enough at statistics to realize that I need data over several dozens of thousands of rolls to suspect something is fishy with dice.

I have heard people say this about dice when someone rolls a few good rolls near the start of the game but never heard them revisit it later in the game after things have evened out or after the same player has a streak of bad rolls.

If a di is cocked we only reroll that one.

to answer the OP, no

Now here's a question.

you have several dice in your hand and are shaking them, looking for 5s and 6s, a di pops out you haven't actually tossed any but it lands as a 6. Does it count or do you pick it up and roll all the dice as a group?

capncarp23 Jul 2018 8:27 p.m. PST

If I was supposed to roll three and I rolled six by mistake and got bupkis, "The Gods have spoken!" and the fail stands.
Agree with rerolling the correct # of dice if a beneficial result, uh, results.
FusilierDan: since it wasn't intentional, scoop it back up and roll them all together, whether it was a good or bad roll.

pick it up and roll all the dice as a group

That.

advocate24 Jul 2018 8:13 a.m. PST

Cocked dice – we only re-roll the cocked die/dice. Because the extra ones might not matter: rolling opposed sets of dice for armour penetration/armour save for example: I know you have 4 saves so rolling the one cocked dice is still going to leave me short for an effective shot. Having a cocked die isn't going to allow all to be re-rolled.

Old Contemptibles01 Aug 2018 12:05 p.m. PST

Only use house dice.
Don't practice roll your dice.
Don't throw dice at anyone or anything.
Don't handle your dice until you are ready to roll.
Just roll the dice and see if we need to check the charts.
After you roll, leave the dice alone. Don't pick them up right away.
Rolls that end up on the floor don't count. Re-roll.
