Ahoy age of sail friends,

This year I've been working on a second and final edition of the Captaincy rules. I've decided to roll them out with a free preview.

Enterprize is a streamlined version of Captaincy 2.0 that covers frigate warfare in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. It's here at the link, it's complete unto itself, and it's free. Please share the news.

My goal all along has been to find new approaches to depicting sailing warfare. The result is a game that emphasizes the experience of sailing itself, and that abstracts topics that other games treat in more detail. I welcome any feedback you might have -- I would love to see Enterprize reviewed here.

best to everyone,
CC

Looking forward to giving them a read.

Hi CC!

The link above only takes me to the $15 USD main rules (version 1 I imagine).
I have Captaincy. I would like to take a look at Enterprise but don't see it.

Hi Stew art,

Huh. That is mysterious. The link takes me to Enterprize. Moreover, the Captaincy page contains a link to Enterprize, as I think customers should look at Enterprize first and then wait on Captaincy until 2.0 comes out.

You can also get the download by searching for Curs'd Captain under publishers on Wargame Vault. Third option: I posted a copy here on Boardgamegeek.

Thanks for writing & let me know if this works --

CC,

Thanks for the link. Read through it and have to say sailing seems complicated for my taste for an AOS game. Have you ever considered using these mechanics ( which are novel) for a sailing racing game such as Regatta? There I want my sailing a bit complicated as that is the whole game.
Just a thought.

Cheers, Joe -- it's not for everyone, although you might find that the dice sorting mechanism goes quickly once you are used to it.

I very much intended to put sailing in the foreground, and to suggest the differences in sailing performance that were important to AOS captains (particularly in the era depicted by Enterprize, when both British and French officers filed eloquent reports on their ship's sailing qualities). On the other hand, cannon fire and (especially) damage are less complicated than in several AOS games. Partly this is a re-balancing of the weight of the rules in the interest of playability, and partly it's a statement: sailing is the more important topic. You aim the cannon by aiming the ship, as the saying goes.

I'm not the one to make an America's Cup game out of this system, since I don't follow sports, and I've already done all the research I want to do for the Captaincy project. Maybe someone else would feel inspired to do that. As it is, it is a racing game if you don't shoot. I believe that the navies of France and Britain met for sailing speed trials after the Napoleonic wars were over.

best wishes,
CC
