Who best represents a general who would have been great, but was held back due to politics? |

Colin Powell/Norman Shwarzkopf, would have saved a lot of hassle later on if they'd have been allowed to prove how good they were. |

Napoleon, far better general when he didn't have to worry running a country. |

Sir John Moore. He only got into the Corunna situation because he was following political orders. |

Agamemnon. Dude had to hold together a coalition of states to recover his brother's wife and keep all of the egos in line while simultaneously maintaining his position at the top in a manner that suited it. Then he had to deal with pissed off Gods because someone took their priest's daughter. Never mind the fact that the whole time the entire conflict is caused by three angry bitches who are struggling to see which one of them is the most desirable, which of course leads to a bunch of immature, conceited and yet incredibly powerful, in some cases, immortal deities putting themselves into the mix. Not many of the others listed so far had to deal with the squabbling of their own allies and the squabbling of the heavens above. After that I'd nominate Marlborough, who probably would have conquered the entirety of Europe if he hadn't been encumbered by idgits. |

Louis Joseph, Duc de Vendome or possibly Louis Hector Duc de Villars. Vendome got saddled with a royal prince and lost the Battle of Oudenarde, but won on his own in Spain. Villars had a draw at Malplaquet and a convincing victory at Denain. If left without politics…? |

I never thought of MacArthur. But I have to agree that hobbling him was a good thing. |

Hannibal- if he'd been fully supported from home we'd be reading books on how superior the Carthaginian military system of mercenaries was over the Roman citizen armies. |

I agree with Pictors Studio on Agamemnon. That war should have been over in a year or two, but politics. |

Ditto to Patton. If he hadn't been constrained by the politics of Eisenhower Being deceived by the Russians as to their intent, he could've taken Prague and kept Czechoslovakia out of the iron curtain. |

Does being betrayed by appeasers in your government count? Vlad III Drăculești was handling the Ottomans fairly well until his cousins gave him up to them. |
