"This is a plan for the end of the world, dated 1970. The arrows are armies and the red vertical symbols are nuclear bombs, all part of a part of Cold War contingency plan crafted by the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies in case of war. War that would have destroyed civilization….." Main page link Amicalement Armand |

We have a back yard bunker with a date in the concrete entrance that says 2/1958. Some times when I've had it with my husband and our 15 year old son, I get my Kindle and go sit in there. Its nice and with the lighting john(my husband) had installed (as a joke. Which was really on him, as the cost was over 2k), I still would'nt want to have to be in there more then a very few days… But its not bad, as long as the entrance stays open. |

If one survives in a bunker, etc. during a nuclear attack, you still will have to eventually come out. As you run out of supplies, etc. There still may be a lot of fallout, radiation, etc., around, and that may be all … |

Sounds like a nice place to put a big wargame table… (smile) Amicalement Armand |

I wonder whether Reagan (c. 1984) would have used the nuclear option had the Warsaw Pact launched a successful attack, taking its armies to the French border and occupying Denmark, Holland, and Belgium? I don't think he would have done so. The populations of these countries would surely have preferred Soviet occupation rather than nuclear destruction. At least they could hope for the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union (c. 1991). As a possible campaign wargame, the conventional attack and defence of West Germany, Denmark, and Holland and Belgium is very, very interesting. I've seen it done as a board game and it was an enjoyable game. |

Regardless … the US/NATO would have counterattacked and IMO WMDs would have been the very last option … |

When it came down to it, wouldn't the loss of countless European lives and an immense wasteland have been too high a price to pay for a WMD response? What would the West Germans, Danish, and others actually have demanded? My interest here is to game a large scale confrontation between NATO / WARSAW Pact armies that isn't ended more or less as soon as it begins! Thanks Legion 4 |

I'm pretty sure that the French would have gone nuclear to stop the Russians from advancing into France. |

When it came down to it, wouldn't the loss of countless European lives and an immense wasteland have been too high a price to pay for a WMD response? What would the West Germans, Danish, and others actually have demanded? Very much so … a nuclear, bio, chem wasteland would be of no use to anyone. And civilian losses would have been horrendous. The military had protective masks, gear, decon, etc. But with nucs, that probably wouldn't make much difference. And with a Nuclear exchange in Europe, that does not mean it would stay in Europe. Nucs would probably have been launched to hit other targets outside of Western Europe. E.g. The USA, USSR, PRC, etc., etc. And fallout would go virtually everywhere. Not a good outcome … But we trained and prepared for it almost daily, back when I was on active duty, '79-'90 …
