Those with a deep interest in the Sudan Campaigns may wish to consider purchasing a copy of, "Slaves of Fortune: Sudanese Soldiers & The River War 1896-1898," by Ronald M LaMothe. Published in 2011 by James Currey, an imprint of Boydell and Brewer Ltd., "Slaves of Fortune" is a fascinating and overdue look at the lives of those who filled the ranks of the Soudanese battalions serving in the Egyptian Army as a part of General Kitchener's reconquest of the Sudan. In 200 pages Mr. LaMothe covers a lot of ground, including but not limited to: recruitment; camp life; relations with British battalions; how they fought; how they saw themselves and how others viewed them; retirement. ‘Slaves of Fortune" is well illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and illustrations. Highly recommended.
