Reading the previous post TMP link I realized I have no idea of movies with ancient or medieval battles. I can think of only three movies since the 50s. Braveheart and Gladiator which I saw and 300 Spartans which I did not see.

What medieval or ancients movies, good or bad, which have battles in them have been made since the 50s?

Henry V with Kenneth Branagh (1989) has a a pretty good battle scene, I believe.

The one saving grace of Oliver Stone's Alexander, imho, were the battle scenes; Guagamela and Ipsus in particular. Russel Crowe's Robin Hood had a pretty good siege scene and a somewhat OTT amphibious invasion scene. Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven had a number of battle scenes, some good, some pretty naff. Kagemusha and Ran both have lots of samurai battle scenes. Those just off the top of my head.

Here's a few: El Cid (battle of Valencia), Fall of the Roman Empire, Alexander Nevski (made before the 50's), Alexander the Great (Burton, 50's), Spartacus, Cleopatra (brief battle scenes). I love the Henry V film.

After the 1950s:

The War Lord (1965), great siege and the first movie with mud in the Middle Ages.

The Longships (1964)

Taras Bulba (1962)

The Legend of Suriyothai (2001), so many elephants.

Excalibur (1981), fantasy armour, great battles and movie.

Always liked the battle scenes in The Vikings (1958) and The Longships

Ride the mare of steel! (1964)

Nothing wrong with the sword play in the Errol Flynn Robin Hood movies (or swash buckling movies for that matter!)

The Kirk Douglas Spartacus had big battle scene, I think they rented the Spanish army to film it

Prince of Foxes (1949) -- Tyrone Power and Orson Welles!

Genghis Khan (1965) -- Omar Sharif

Red Cliffs.

Love the old 1962 300 Spartans with Richard Egan and Ralph Richardson.

Game of Thrones. Seriously.
Season 2 had the assault on Kings Landing by Stannis the Mannis. Mostly guys waving swords around.
Later, I forget which season, the Wildlings attacking Castle Black but it's a lot better. And Episode 10 has Stannis attacking the Wildling camp. It reminded me of Gaugemela in Alexander.
Hardhome is fun. A swarming zombie attack, and the Good Guys barely escape.
The Battle of the Bastards is basically Burgundians defeating Picts. Except the Picts get a last minute Tolkienesque deus ex machina rescue by HYW English.

Heaven and Earth.

Small scale, Musa The Warrior.

Gladiator (2000)
Rome (HBO series, 2005-7)

Mongol has pretty good fights and a big battle at the end. It's a good film in general, too.

There's a 2001 TV movie called Attila, with some battle scenes. Mostly, its about Aetius and Attila.

The War Lord is great fun if a bit retro now – a few of the characters (not the stars obviously) even have authentic hair styles. I'm surprised more haven't mentioned Kingdom of Heaven or Alexander. Another favourite of mine is Arn, Knight Templar.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The original Henry V (Olivia's version) has if anything a better battle scene than Branagh's.

Ivanhoe has a fun castle attack scene. Kingdom of Heaven has a great siege. Sword of Lancelot has a good final battle.

But for open field battles, Battle of the Bastards (GOT) is the best ever filmed (though of course the knick of time charge is hollywood). The shield wall crush scene where the Bolton's use DBX mechanics to near crush our hero is as close to a "real" medieval battle as film is like to get. Compare this to the two lines sprinting toward each other that we usually get.

Quite a few intense battle scenes in "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" (1999).

Prince Valiant, 1954 (with historically accurate vikings!)

The Fall of the Roman Empire 1964

The Day of the Siege: September Eleven 1683 (2012)

Druids 2001

Jason and the Argonauts 1963 (if you like ancient Greeks fighting in mythological battles)

Ed Cid 1961

The Vikings 1958

Dacii 1967 (1966) [both dates are given]

Scipio Africanus 1937

(okay, it's before the 50's but the battle scenes are better than anything later on for the Punic wars)

and many, many more!
