Hi all,

Despite lots of looking online, I cannot fathom if Panzer crews used the 3 paste camouflage scheme on just the Schürzen (Skirts), leaving the underlying tank surfaces in Dark yellow, or if the camo pattern was used on the tank itself?
Also, was the pattern used on the inner surfaces of the Schürzen?

Any help will be much appreciated!

I doubt the insides of the skirt was ever painted. As to your other question, it depends, it kind of depends on the unit some painted both some just the skirts. Generally the paint was issued to the group and left up to them how best to use it.

As jdginaz said, it depends. Factors such as the year, theater, unit, if the vehicle was coming from the factory, a maintenance facility, or being painted by its crew, and many others impacted the thoroughness and quality of the camouflage paint job. My source is the Panzer Colors series of books by Bruce Culver.
It seems unlikely that anything under the skits would have been painted. It is also possible that if skirts were added later or replaced that those would not have the same pattern/color scheme as the rest of the tank.

I can't say it is something Ive ever thought about! I never camo the insides of the skirts, but I do camo visible bits of the insides e. Pz IV turrets and hulls, as they are very visible from the air.

The camo was against air attack as much as anything else.
