roving bandit | 17 Jul 2018 7:11 a.m. PST |
Depends on the game and opponent. Most minis games I try to keep it layed back, so maybe 3 or 4. |

1. I game to relax and spend time with my friends. The game is going to go how ever the dice rolls, and maybe, the game cards drawn decide. I don't play tournament games. |

Depends on a number of factors … However, I'd generally rate myself as a 7 or 8 most of the time … |

Mostly solo gamer, I'm fine but the other guy….. |
PzGeneral | 17 Jul 2018 8:17 a.m. PST |
Used to be 7 or 8. Then a good friend used really harsh words describing me. Now, 3 or 4. Made me see, these are just games… |

10 but that does not mean being rude, cheating, reading each rule to my best advantage and then exactly the opposite when it is not to my advantage, etc… I play to win and I expect my opponent to do the same and though winning is great a good contest is the best win or lose. |
Winston Smith | 17 Jul 2018 8:32 a.m. PST |
I like to win of course. But I can graciously accept ……. No! No! No! |

2 or 3. I generally only play with friends and folks I know. I want to give them a good game but…it's only a game. I'm more focused on enjoying our time together, creating good memories, talking about our shared hobby, etc. |

5 or so. I game infrequently so I savor each opportunity. I like winning but try to be gracious in defeat. |

2 or 3. The fun of the game and the sociable interactions of a friendly group are worth more than the fleeting brush of victory across one's ego. |

1 to 2. Id rather have a good game and a story than win. Like at Historicon in my game saturday, the guy playing to my front and left moved and exposed my flank (we were in a semi-salient) I was curious, but man, that story is all i talked about |

Not Applicable. The concept of "competitiveness" has no relevance to my gaming. I play the best game I can in each particular case, of course, partly from the enjoyment of tackling the specific tactical problem presented by the scenario, but mostly out of respect for the other gamers; to do less would be disrespectful. Many of the games I run or participate in are indecisive (which is fine, considering how many historical battles are arguably not a clear victory for anyone). Some tactical successes are mitigated by strategic failures, and vice versa. Once a game is over, I quickly forget who "won"(if, indeed, anyone can be said to have "won") and remember only the narrative generated by the game and the good times I've had with my friends. That's all that matters. |

I don't think being competitive is the same thing as being a jerk. Also, you can be a jerk without being competitive. |

I play for fun. As long as the game and the players are fun I'm not over bothered about true result. It will be no surprise that I don't take part in tournaments for that reason. Whilst some tournament players are most likely great people I have seen too many who are in it to win at all costs. Life has enough stress without that. |

I guess it reflects how bad a week at work has been, sometimes, after a frustrating week I just want to go out and KILL SOMETHING! – on the tabletop, of course! |

I play more to learn the rules and understand what they are trying to present than to win, but I do try to win. Where does that put me? |

I like to think I'm not that wedded on winning, but I catch myself now and then really trying hard and getting upset when things don't go my way. Though there are tons of games I play where I don't care if I'll win or lose. Those games I do know well and understand and have a more decent chance of winning do bring out the winner mentality in me and I feel bad if I am beaten at rules I am competent with. |
Pictors Studio | 19 Jul 2018 9:14 a.m. PST |
I will deliberately play to the character of the commander or troops I am playing to make the game a narrative success even if it means making decisions that will make it more likely that I will lose. |
UshCha | 20 Jul 2018 8:44 a.m. PST |
Not compettative, however I do generally hate losing badly. This is because generally I feel I have not given the other guy a decent game. If I get trounced by a player having a stroke of genius then being trounced is a privileg as you learn from it. Similarly trouncing a player generally means the same, it was not a well designed scenario for the player concerned. |

I always try to do my best to win because it's a game, but as it's a leisure activity, my group tries to work through the rules, sometimes taking back moves or recalculating odds, etc to play rules as written. Granted, each of us often finds rules that defy our own internal logic, and quite often we change them for the next time -- assuming they're worth a next time. :) |
