Can anyone recommend a good restaurant for dinner near the Antietam battlefield? Something nice maybe with a bit of history if possible? |

Good question. What makes Antietam special is its lack of commercialization. Sharpsburg is pretty small. But there is a main drag. |

The main drag has a few decent choices, but nothing with that historical feel. I might suggest a 30 minute drive and dine in Turner's Gap: oldsouthmountaininn.com |

There is a Cracker Barrel back in Hagerstown. Odds are there are some nice "local color" restaurants if you do some searching. I've always heard that Bonnie's at Red Byrd was pretty good. |

This thread would make for a cool scenario in ACW: "Capture the Antietam Restaurant by lunchtime and hold it until supper." |

Bavarian Inn in Sheperardstown. There's a great diner "Bonnies at the Red Byrd" in Keedysville, just east of town. MD 65 north will take you under US70 to the Prime Outlets where there a chain steak house, Longhorn. But Old South Mountain Inn is the best and would be my first choice (having eaten there for anniversaries and Valentine's Day). I used to live in Harper's Ferry. |

Thanks for the recommendations! The Old South Mountain Inn looks the ticket. |

I'd also recommend heading south 1/2 hour to Harper's Ferry. Several good little restaurants within a couple of blocks of each other in the historic part of town. |

When I was in Sharpsburg a few years ago, I think that there was only one option on the main drag, a local bar. If half-cooked, rotting potatoes don't take your fancy (and the rest of it wasn't much better), I would avoid it. |

Yeah, as noted, the Antietam area is fairly undeveloped. The Old South Mountain Inn is very nice. A batch of us (in uniform) descended on the place after an 1860 Election Day living history program at Harpers Ferry one time and it was great. |

If half-cooked, rotting potatoes don't take your fancy (and the rest of it wasn't much better), Well I'd think that might fit in with " maybe with a bit of history if possible?" … I'm sure that may have been served a few times to the troops on both sides. |

Is the Laurel Brigade Inn still there in Leesburg VA? |

Out of interest I had a look at Old South Mountain, the menu looks nice. I am surprised how expensive Australian wines are there. I appreciate that I was looking at restaurant prices but they're five to six times more expensive than here and that's on a straight dollar for dollar (and with the current exchange rate of about AUS$1.00 to US$0.74 there should be a further 25% benefit to the USA). |

Yep and the Aussie wines on the list aren't exactly premium products. Best to stick with the US wines on that list. |

Probably transportation and US/Maryland taxes on alcohol. Maryland is one of the states know for its high taxes on everything. Used to live there but moved out after I retired. Income tax rate dropped to 5% from 8%. |

If you go to Leesburg, then Johnson's Steak House (if still there) if for nothing else the wall decorations. They were covered with CW weapons. Other than Red Byrd you had to go to Sheperardstown for anything. |
