A friend of mine just came across a relative who was a drummer in the v. Donop Regiment and sent to America in 1783 (according to family records). I didn't think any replacements were sent over in '83 as they were sending them back then. Anyone have any information on this or know where records for that year can be found ('82 is the last I can come up with). The family name was Gargel. Thanks |

Bear in mind that troops might still have been sent over in 1783, having been recruited and trained in 1782. A specialist, such as a drummer or pioneer, might have been needed. Convoys used to sail for America in late March/early April, so plenty of time to get over and take part in a few parades and drills before the time came to bug out. |

Try this link: link No first name, drummer in von Donop, appointed 1783. I don't have access to the database our reenacting group copied from the HETRINA catalog, but something like 55 men from the regiment were discharged in America, some went back to Europe, others stayed. There were an additional 80 or so deserters across the length of the war, something like half of them in 1778, (didn't want to leave Philadelphia) and rather more in 81, 82, and 83. |

For those of you who don't recognize the name, the above writer is "Hessian Bob". Generally considered to be the last word on the German forces in the AWI. |
