If that idea is still in your plans (for Fantasy, Old West, VSF, Pulp SF, etc.), you should really check out this guy's video tutorial. Even though it's meant for dioramas, I can see loads of potential for wargaming application: YouTube link Now that's what I call that Luke Towan a guy that is truly dedicated to his project! I can already imagine someone here making a mine to game "Eight-Legged Freaks". :) Dan PS. Other options here: YouTube link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link

A few years back, a local club did a huge cube out of pink board. It was about 5' square. The top was the ground and the tunnels were all cut in to the sides. It was a Starship Trooper game with bug tunnels instead of a mine, but the idea is the same. For fog of war the tunnels in the sides were covered with index cards so troopers could only see a short way. |

Some 50 years ago "Scale Modeler" magazine printed an article on modeling a cutaway section of the Maginot Line in 1/72 scale; a diorama and not intended for gaming, but the potential was there. The concept might be most appropriate for a Verdun game. |

I've never made any kind of cross-section terrain like this but I always wanted to! Especially one for a game like D & D or Frostgrave where you have an entrance to a dungeon through a secret door in a cellar or basement of a city building that leads to the underground parts of the terrain board. I may attempt to do this on a more limited scale where I have a terrain board with some underground rooms, tunnels, or caverns beneath a town or castle or something like that. I think the Terrain Tutor did a Frostgrave board like that with some cross-section elements. I think this is the right video that shows it: YouTube link |

That is one of those "someday" projects. Dwarf mine invaded by goblins. |

I think I saw GW had done something similar more than a few years back at a Gencon. I'm also in the LONG line of 'damn, I was always going to do that…' Doug PS Just started the Youtube; CRAP, that lighting! |

I would love to play in a game with that, but I don't think I would want to have to take care of and store the mine or cave complex. The Thai tv news had some very good dioramas of the cave complex where the soccer team was trapped. I am still not sure if it was a model or CGI like the weather report. My wife found the Thai tv news on YouTube. |

Right, Dan! …but I don't think I would want to have to take care of and store the mine or cave complex. Say, 3' x 3' x 4" isn't THAT big a piece of styro to have a around… Making a cube that breaks down to four flat pieces of that size again doesn't daunt me. Doug |

I think that Necromunda piece looked amazing, but it still didn't look like an underground piece. It looks more like an above ground tower than something dug out of the ground. I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps the thickness between floors is too even throughout, or each floor is the same level throughout (no "sunken floors" on the same level). I don't know. Like I said, something screams "tower" to me. Dan PS. Or perhaps if each floor had been configured as an inverted cone, like the Hive in Resident Evil? I think that might have made it look less tower-like.

For all involved – I am a mining engineer, and would be quite happy to provide feedback on proposed designs for mine-based boards! |
